Positive and negative non-verbal language
If communication occurs in person, or even over video, be mindful of body language as the discussion or briefing is ongoing. Body language perceptions can be different for each individual, town, city, and country. There are two general stances to look for that tend to be common across communities:
- Closed posture: Arms folded tightly, holding the head, stern facial expressions, avoiding looking at the presenter or the material being discussed, and head tilted back are negative signs that could convey that the individual does not agree with what is being discussed or that they are not open to receiving communication. They are firm in their perception.
- Loose posture: Arms open, hands loosely grasped, visual attention throughout discussions, head straight or slightly tilted to the side, and erect posture while sitting are positive signs that normally indicate that the individual is open to receiving communication.
