Network Programming and Automation Essentials

Network Basics for Development

This chapter is focused on explaining the basics and jargon used in computer networking. The idea is to build a good foundation to be used throughout the book.

If you are a network engineer or have experience in this field, you might want to skip it, or perhaps skim through it.

If you are a software developer with little network experience, this chapter is for you. It will help you build a solid base on network jargon that will be useful when writing code for network automation.

The following are the topics that we will cover in this chapter:

  • Reviewing protocol layers, network device types, and network topologies
  • Describing network architecture and its components
  • Illustrating network management components, network bastions, and more

The author begins the book by defining many networking terms and jargons, ranging from network designs to specific concepts, such as ACLs. This provides a good basis for the reader to understand what is being automated. The book then transitions to accessing the network. I found these topics to be important, as that is what is changing in the industry. Engineers now have a choice, other than the CLI, on how they want to interface with network devices. Topics like NETCONF, RESTCONF, gRPC and gNMI provide new interfaces to automate network configurations and stream telemetry data. I think having an entire section focus on device configuration management helps relate to the reader. Many network engineers begin looking at automation when they need to retrieve or push out configuration across many devices, so having an entire chapter focused on it helps a lot.Part 2 begins focusing on programming concepts. I personally enjoyed the section on versioning using git. Git takes practice, but is a system that every network engineer should learn. The last few chapters about Python, Go, scaling your code, and testing frameworks are all concepts the reader should get hands-on practice with in order to understand the differences between the languages, frameworks, etc. I highly recommend setting up a home lab environment and putting all the concepts learned throughout this book to practice!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible.
