Understanding DC motors
DC motor is a type of electric motor that is powered by DC supplied by a battery or a DC source. Read Chapter 3, Actuators And Their Application In Industrial Automation, to learn the basic construction of DC motor. Here, we will be looking at the two types of DC motor which include:
- Brushed
- Brushless
Let’s start by looking at brushed.
Brushed
They are used for simple control system. It consist of a stator, rotor, commutator, brushes, and so on the brush is usually made of carbon. Magnetic field is produced by passing current through the commutator and brush connected to the rotor. One of the drawback of brush motor is the wear and tear of brushes. Types of brushed DC motor include:
- Permanent magnet
- Series wound
- Shunt wound
- Compound wound
