In this chapter and the following one, we are going to take a different approach. The nearest neighbors algorithm will take a supporting role here, while image processing will be the main protagonist of the chapter. We will start by loading images and we will use Python to represent them in a suitable format for the machine learning algorithms to work with. We will be using the nearest neighbors algorithm for classification and regression. We will also learn how to compress information in images into a smaller space. Many of the concepts explained here are transferable and can be used with other algorithms with slight tweaks. Later, in Chapter 7, NeuralNetworks - Here Comes the Deep Learning, we will build on the knowledge acquired here and continue with image processing by using neural networks.
