A BIM Professional's Guide to Learning Archicad

What Is Archicad and How Can You Learn It?

In this first chapter, we will introduce you to the book and its main content. We will get some background information about the Archicad software and its development and how it is installed and licensed. We will also learn about the main objectives and approach of this book, setting expectations right from the start. This is not meant to be a cookbook with step-by-step recipes showing buttons to click but, instead, aims to give you a proper understanding of how the software fits into a professional workflow.

The main topics we’ll cover in this chapter are as follows:

  • An introduction to Archicad
  • A brief history of Archicad
  • Setting up Archicad
  • Licensing
  • The approach of the book

By the end of this chapter, you will know what Archicad is, how you can install it, and what license types exist. You will also have a clear understanding of the approach toward learning Archicad in this book.

Description

A BIM Professional’s Guide to Learning Archicad is a comprehensive introduction to all that Archicad has to offer for creating 3D models, 2D document extracts, and related outputs. This book is not a click-by-click series of recipes, but rather focuses on helping you understand why and how Archicad works by providing realistic examples and expert tips. The book gradually introduces you to Archicad tools using ample examples. It then helps you master its complexity through clear modules, allowing you to start your first project quickly, gain useful skills in subsequent projects, and keep using the book as a source for insights into the software. You’ll start with the basic modeling of construction elements and then move on to adding roofs, stairs, and objects to the project. Next, you’ll dive into basic drafting and 2D views for creating 2D output, and grasp how to use attributes and more advanced modeling tools for designing curtain walls and sites. The concluding chapters will show you how to extract and visualize your data and automate the publishing of your extracts and 2D documents into a variety of output formats. By the end of this book, you’ll have gained a solid understanding of Archicad, how to implement it efficiently in your architectural projects, and how BIM can improve your overall design workflow.

Who is this book for?

This book is for design engineers, architectural designers, residential designers, BIM professionals, and anyone working in construction, manufacturing, or similar fields. Whether you're an absolute beginner or a professional looking to upgrade your engineering design and urban planning skills, you'll find this book useful. Although no prior knowledge of Archicad is necessary, knowledge of construction (architectural design) and a basic understanding of 2D CAD drafting is recommended. The book is based on the international version of the software and uses metric units.

What you will learn

The book is quite cleverly composed. All important Archicad tools and functions are presented in this impressive book. More complicated functions are left to an eventual follow up. I counted about 30 explanations where I learned something new. And I have used Archicad as a teacher of BIM for 20 years. The combination of theory, examples and a house to build is smart and pedagogic. Some minor spelling errors does not disturb nor the reading or the understanding. I look forward to a book for more experienced users.

I'm an experienced BIM modeler but fairly new to Archicad. A BIM Professional's Guide to Learning Archicad has great in depth explanations and illustrations that help users get a clear understanding of the environment and where to find the tools you need to accomplish the models you need to design. Workflows for tools are easy to follow and understand.Need to share data with other designers using different software, or with key project shareholders/clients/owners? This book is a must have to understand how to break down those model communication barriers.Definitely a keeper for your library whether you are a beginner or an experienced user.

Ruben and Stefan have written an excellent guide to learning Archicad.I've been using and teaching Archicad since 2006. I've written a lot about learning Archicad and have read most of the how to guides published over the last two decades, as I'm always looking for good resources to share with other Archicad users. A BIM Professional's Guide to Learning Archicad is the best Archicad book I've come across. The book covers the basics a new user needs and introduces them to more advanced topics as well. It's well written, intelligently organized, and covers a breadth of topics. The explanations are clear and helpful. The images are illustrative and support the text. It's clear that Ruben and Stefan are experts who are passionate about sharing their knowledge of Archicad and helping others.I really appreciate the appendix that focuses on what people should do when they get stuck. The tips outlined in that section are so important for people wanting to learn a complex BIM program like Archicad. I'd absolutely recommend this book for anyone looking to learn Archicad, or who just wants to brush up on the fundamentals. No Archicad user knows every aspect of the program, so this book definitely has something for everyone.
