Description

Amazon Braket is a cloud-based pay-per-use platform for executing quantum algorithms on cutting-edge quantum computers and simulators. It is ideal for developing robust apps with the latest quantum devices. With this book, you'll take a hands-on approach to learning how to take real-world problems and run them on quantum devices. You'll begin with an introduction to the Amazon Braket platform and learn about the devices currently available on the platform, their benefits, and their purpose. Then, you'll review key quantum concepts and algorithms critical to converting real-world problems into a quantum circuit or binary quadratic model based on the appropriate device and its capability. The book also covers various optimization use cases, along with an explanation of the code. Finally, you'll work with a framework using code examples that will help to solve your use cases with quantum and quantum-inspired technologies. Later chapters cover custom-built functions and include almost 200 figures and diagrams to visualize key concepts. You’ll be able to scan the capabilities provided by Amazon Braket and explore the functions to adapt them for specific use cases. By the end of this book, you’ll have the tools to integrate your current business apps and AWS data with Amazon Braket to solve constrained and multi-objective optimization problems.

And it actually does more than showing how to run quantum circuits on Amazon Bracket. It also includes extensive explanations of algorithms, with enough graphics to ease the understanding. The book focuses on optimization problems, as far as I can tell, touching upon a large variety of them. Perhaps the new edition should include the Grover Optimizer, but I'm biased here. The code accompanying a book is very important to me, and I can see that the author made an effort to provide clear and clean code. This is a big plus. Readers may find it useful to read and/or run particular algorithms they are interested in, even if they don't read the whole book. That's what I find myself doing with many books, and this is one of them.

I like that the book started with how to set up Braket, beginning with how to create an AWS account, and how to set up ancillary AWS services like S3 and Notebook. There are enough examples to try for first-time users. While running the experiments, the reader can delve into the background of the devices, like annealing-based ones or those based on quantum gates. Chapter 3 details the tasks setups, device costs, and billing. Chapter 4 gets the reader writing their first quantum experiments using Braket codes. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 focus on developing codes for Quantum Annealer, Gate-based quantum computing use cases. Chapter 8 deals with Hybrid Algorithms and optimization, while chapter 9 explains how to run QAQA on simulators, particularly on Amazon Braket devices. Examples include optimizing an 11x11 matrix, 34x34 matrix, and 38x38 sparse matrix. Section 3, chapters 10 through 12, delve into real-world use cases like single-objective and multi-objective optimization.I can say that in 2 weeks, by following this book as a guide, I am very comfortable navigating and writing code for quantum experiments using Amazon Braket. I highly recommend this book and hope Alex will continue to update the contents as new features (and backend devices) are added to the Amazon Braket Service.

The book is handy from a practical point of view. The book doesn't aim to explain the science behind the quantum computer hardware platforms, which you can access through the Amazon Braket or the physics behind the quantum algorithms.Four levels of practicality in this book:1. The complicated physics of the high technology field of quantum hardware and algorithm topics are simplified so that they give you strong usability knowledge without losing their scientific credibility. The book answers the fundamental questions that puzzle every business nowadays; How do we access quantum computer hardware and emulators? Which hardware or emulator should we use, and how do we know which one fits our needs? How much does running my application in quantum computer hardware or emulators cost?2. The next level is the application itself. What do we mean by a quantum application? The applications are mainly based on two classes of algorithms; QUBO and QAOA ( Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm). The simplicity here is that the algorithmic purpose is captured on a very figurative explanatory and programming level without losing the integrity of science and practical purposes.3. Third level goes to the most crucial insight that the book wants to bring or teach the user; How to make sense of the computation outcome. Since with Amazon Braket, you can access different hardware and emulators; then the question arises how do I judge what the best for me is? The book gives a lengthy explanation of the benchmarking approach.4. Fourth level of usability goes toward real use cases, use cases for business needs. An example is inventory optimization which is quite interesting. It is a complicated problem for the supply chain. The business advantage and profitability of having an excellent and well-optimized supply chain are unimaginable for the companies who didn’t take the step to optimize that.I would recommend it to students, professionals, quantum software engineers or those who want to switch to that field, to scientists to see how their theoretical, experimental, and technological efforts get leveraged to the end user, to the industrial managers who want to run and use quantum computers for their specific applications.Angie Qarry - Quantum Physicist
