Inkscape by Example

Design a Clever Tech Logo with Inkscape

Logo design is one of the most common tasks for graphic designers, so this will be the first in our chain of projects. In this chapter, we will create a logo for a tech company. We will start with designing the logo. Then, in the following chapters, we will look at icon design and illustrations and banner image design, and then combine all these into a website design. During this project, you will learn about how to use paths, color, and text effectively in Inkscape to create a fresh logo!

In this chapter, we are going to cover these main topics:

  • Using Inkscape for logo design
  • Starting the logo design process with the usual first steps
  • Implementing shape and color in logo design in Inkscape
  • Adding text to your logo and modifying letters for more personality
  • Creating logo mutations in various formats for different usages

Using Inkscape for logo design

As logo design is an important job for anyone working in the creative field, it is only natural to expect Inkscape to be up to the task as well. But what are the criteria of software that you can use to create awesome logos? Let me answer that question from another angle: what makes a good logo?

First of all, a good logo has to be versatile. Technically, this means it has to be vector-based. Vector files are scalable, editable, and portable. They allow us to transform the final logo into any color or size to use it on (almost) any surface. A vector file can be exported into the most common standard image file formats. (You will learn more about formats at the end of this chapter and even more in Chapter 7, Combine Inkscape and Other (Free) Programs in the Design Workflow)

Second, a good logo is simple. Most people think it takes no effort to create a simple design. But to create a simple but creative logo, you need to work a lot. Simple means easy to remember and redraw with a few elements, but this simplicity must be achieved first.

And finally, a good logo needs to be creative! A creative logo stands out; it is a unique visual image. A creative logo is built on a lot of thinking, sketching, and trial and error.

Being a vector graphical program, Inkscape has all the tools you can use to create a versatile logo. It can export to different formats, as well as take full advantage of vector shape and color editing.

I learned Inkscape through István's video guides. He made a piece of software that seemed so complicated easy to understand, and a delight to use. In this book, he continues that trend, taking us from creating simple shapes to complex graphics for web and print usage. Whether you want to make a logo for your own business, create art assets for a video game, get started as a graphic designer, or transition from another program to the incredible Inkscape, István has you covered!

Author Istvan Szep is well known to the Inkscape community as a professional illustrator and designer who uses the FREE vector design program Inkscape in his work. His YouTube videos have helped thousands (including me) to get acquainted with Inkscape. Now he brings his teaching and design expertise to one comprehensive book, with great step by step projects that increase your skill set as you go along. Learning by example is the best way, and something Istvan certainly understands. You don’t need an expensive Adobe subscription to do high end vector design. I’ve been using Inkscape for a number of years in my own work, and now I have an up-to-date instruction book with all the latest features clearly explained and demonstrated. This is the only book you need now to get you up to speed with Inkscape and creating your unique work, whether professionally or for the amateur artist just starting out,Highly recommended!

This is an extremely helpful book. My first impression of it is that each project tutorial has been explained so clearly and directly, that beginners and advanced Inkscape users will find it much faster to get a project done, and also use the same process steps and ideas to branch out and create just about anything in design and art.For those who are just starting out in vector art, this contains very well thought out illustrations and visual guides to help to learn about Inkscape features and complete the tutorials. Visual and written communication is very simple and straight forward. For professional users, this is so useful to learn new tips, tricks and troubleshooting to find more efficient ways to getting work done. The author has even provided his own resources for users to download and use to work out the tutorial. It's a valuable resource for those who use open source software and with the help from this book, it will be a much needed resource for artists to work on their portfolio and sustain a career in design and art . I encourage anyone who wants to learn Inkscape to get this book.
