Tuning lifecycle
All portal projects need tuning at different phases in their lifecycles. Considering lower-level environments are tuned, tuning is then applied to production. There are many layers of tuning for a portal environment. One needs to peel the onion in order to drill down into the exercise and understand what needs to be done and where. The first thing to know is what compelling evidence exists to justify parameter, component, application, server, or any other tuning. All systems need tuning at one point or another. Once portal server is installed, everything is installed with out-of-the-box default values for the most part. From the operating system to the network layer to the application layer on portal, to the backend layer, there are many opportunities for improving the quality of service via tuning. The tuning exercise is based on a system-level agreement goal or on an undesirable response time and end user experience (during performance testing) or combined functionality...
