Sustainability, from an environmental perspective, refers to the ability to fulfill our needs as the human race without compromising the future of coming generations.
As regards sustainability, climate change is perceived as the major threat, but there are also other threats, such as biodiversity loss, drought and resource depletion, pollution, and deforestation.
Sustainability is far from a new concept. For millennia, it has been one of the main concerns of humanity, as we have tried to be in tune with the environment and its natural limits, cycles, and changes. But how can this idea apply to companies and businesses?
Even though the concept of sustainability was first formulated at a United Nations conference in 1972, it wasn’t until 1987 that it really took shape, when the Brundtland report titled Our Common Future was published, which clarified the goals of sustainable development.
