Measuring key software delivery metrics
So far, the metrics assigned to the activities are relatively traditional Lean metrics, applicable across any organizational value stream. However, Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble, and Gene Kim, in the book Accelerate: Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organizations, identified a shortlist of key metrics that predict software delivery performance (2018, pages 17-19). Based on their detailed statistical analysis, spanning 23,000 survey responses across 2,000 unique organizations, they found that the following four measures are most critical in measuring software delivery performance:
- Delivery lead time
- Deployment frequency
- Mean time to restore (MTTR)
- Change fail percentage
