We have learned quite a bit in this chapter. The topics covered are considered to be the fundamentals of Ethernet networking. We covered the access method of Ethernet, which is CSMA/CD, and the problems that can occur if running half-duplex or full-duplex. We know what half- or full-duplex mean, so we understand the pros and cons of running one or the other.
We discussed the standards that dealt with Ethernet cabling, such as the IEEE standard, 802.3. We also broke down each type of cable, such as straight-through, crossover, and rolled cables. We looked at what type of cable we should use when connecting internet-working devices together.
Finally, we covered Cisco's blueprint on how we should build a hierarchy in our network to make it more efficient by separating them into three distinct layers: core, distribution, and access.
