Detecting social engineering attacks
We can define social engineering as a non-technical attack vector that aims to exploit psychological principles to manipulate users to obtain access to physical places, data, and systems. As mentioned previously, social engineering is an art and while it may not require technical skills, it requires a lot of manipulation skills to successfully trick the victim. Successful social engineers are charismatic, smart, and empathic, and know how to read the victim to act and react according to the situation without blowing their cover.
Before executing a social engineering attack, the attacker will fabricate a story that supports the selected manipulation technique.
To create the story, the attacker will study the victim, the company, and even the person that they are trying to impersonate. This is done to enhance their credibility, build trust, and avoid raising any suspicions from the victim.
