Summary
We saw in this chapter how open source community participation is a career enabler for maintainers and contributors. Learning from my career story how open source participation has opened doors for me, we recognized the patterns you can apply to your career journey. We then looked at companies using open source as a path for finding new talent, showcasing how participation gains goodwill, and investments in the community are effective strategies for positioning a company as a great place to work that cares about open source participation. Finally, we looked at how companies can recognize employee participation in open source, from ensuring there is a central way to manage open source participation to ensuring open source participation is in a technologist’s annual goals, and using awards and incentives to showcase those contributing to open source.
