Finding co-references in a sentence

Co-reference is the term used to describe certain types of relationships between words of a document, for example, in the following sentence:

Tom was the tallest in his class. He was also the oldest.

There is a co-reference relationship between Tom and He. Both words refer to the same person. In this recipe, we will demonstrate how co-references can be identified within sentences using the Stanford NLP API.

Getting ready

To prepare, we need to do the following:

1. Create a new Maven project
2. Add the following dependency to the POM file:
