Appendix A. PayPal Test Account Configuration

This appendix provides a step-by-step guide to configure the buyer and seller accounts on the PayPal's Sandbox environment. The PayPal's sandbox environment provides a way to test the payment workflows without affecting the actual bank accounts.

Let's configure the test buyer/merchant accounts on the PayPal's Sandbox environment:

  1. Open https://developer.paypal.com/ in a browser and then click on the Sign Up Now button.

  2. Enter the details in the sign up form as follows. This will create a test PayPal account. Remember the e-mail address and password which you provide. Click on the Agree and Submit buttons.

    • First Name: Enter your first name

    • Last Name: Enter your last name

    • Email Address: Enter your valid e-mail address

    • Password: Enter valid password

    • Confirm Password: Enter valid password

    • Security Question: Select security question of your choice

    • Security Answer: Set security answer for your security question

  3. PayPal will show you the confirmation screen. PayPal will also send an e-mail with the e-mail verification link. PayPal will send an e-mail on the same e-mail ID which you specified in the preceding step.

    Tip

    It is not very likely but sometimes this mail can go to the junk mail folder.

  4. Once you receive the e-mail from with the account activation link, click on the link. PayPal will show you the confirmation screen as shown in the following screenshot:

  5. On the same page, you will find the Member Log In area as shown in the following screenshot. Enter your e-mail ID and password, which you have set in step 2. Also, enable the Keep me logged in option. Then click on the Log In button.

  6. Now from the user home page, click on the Preconfigured account hyperlink under the Test Accounts section.

  7. PayPal will show you the Create a Sandbox Test Account page. Enter the following details as mentioned and then press the Create Account button:

    • Country: United States

    • Account Type: Buyer

    • Login Email: buyer

    • Password: buyer@123

    • Add Credit Card: Visa

    • Add Bank Account: Yes

    • Account Balance: 50

  8. PayPal will show you a listing page with the buyer account available on the list. Now click on the Preconfigured hyperlink to add a merchant account. PayPal will again show the Create a Sandbox Test Account page. Enter details and then press the Create Account button:

    • Country: United States

    • Account Type: Seller

    • Login Email: seller

    • Password: seller@123

    • Add Credit Card: Visa

    • Add Bank Account: Yes

    • Account Balance: 0

  9. Now from the account listing page, click on all three disabled links one by one to make them enabled. Also, keep note of the buyer and seller account log-in e-mail addresses as shown in the following screeshot:

By following the preceding steps, we configured the test accounts in the PayPal Sandbox environment. Whenever there is a need, we can use the buyer or seller account with the following credentials:

  • Buyer account

    • User ID: Enter the e-mail ID displayed after performing step 9. We need to use the e-mail ID which starts with the word buyer.

    • Password: buyer@123

  • Seller account

    • User ID: Enter the e-mail ID displayed after performing step 9. We need to use the e-mail ID which starts with the word seller.

    • Password: seller@123
