The Smarter Stack for financial considerations
Another way to use the Smarter Stack is from a financial perspective. When owners and operators look at a building from a financial viewpoint, they look at Capital Expenses (CapEx), Operational Expenses (OpEx), and the revenue or value the building may bring. Most building projects, either new or retrofits, have typically fallen into the CapEx category, since the expense is related to the physical and system items.
Everything else that is required to operate the building falls into the OpEx category. More recently, we are seeing Software as a Service (SaaS) projects, where the project is to be paid for with OpEx funds. SaaS projects are delivered using cloud-based software and storage on a pay-as-you-go basis.
From a balance sheet perspective, data is included with the physical and systems elements of the building, and are all classified as an asset. The Operation, Delivery, Apps, and Exchange layers are classified as expenses, which...
