Showing an instant replay


Sometimes a clip is just so good that you simply need to watch it twice. Of course, you're unlikely to use this in a film production, but for sports or related videos, the instant replay technique is one of the most commonly used. FCPX's speed change tools give us a couple of options for applying this type of effect.

Getting ready

You can use any clip to perform this exercise. In our case, we've got a clip of a breakdancer bouncing in a circle on the ground using only one hand, as shown in the following screenshot:

How to do it...

  1. 1. Highlight a clip you want to turn into an instant replay.

  2. 2. Choose Instant Replay from the Retime pop-up menu (or go to Modify | Retime | Instant Replay), as follows:

    Your clip will now appear twice as long, with two identical sections at 100% speed. Visually, it looks as if we have duplicated the clip right after itself, as follows:

  3. 3. Click-and-drag the retiming handle (marked by the two vertical lines on the right-hand edge of the Retime...
