Being a professional data visualization practitioner myself, I must conclude that Andy Kirk has really nailed it: the data visualization design process he describes matches my personal experience of creating data visualizations almost exactly. The book especially describes the process of designing explanatory and exploratory visualizations, and is less concerned with visualizations as exhibition.I really like the chapter on Demonstrating Editorial Focus. This is something that is not often emphasized in data visualization introduction books, but it is a very useful one, as it focuses on the storytelling part of a visualization.Chapter 5 provides a very good overview of different charts. If you're just starting out with visualization, you might see some charts that you didn't know before. If you're a real expert, you might be missing some, but the categorization nicely groups the different chart types by method. I especially like the fact that he mentions the appropriate data variables and visual variables, which is really helpful in picking the right chart.Overall I think the book is very good, but be aware that the real emphasis is on all the aspects of the process itself. Don't expect a book with code examples on "how to create this visualization". So, when you've read this book, I think you're more aware of all the various facets involved in the design of a data visualization. You're also able to distinguish good visualizations from bad visualizations, and lastly, it gives you the right steps that should be involved in designing a visualization yourself. The final chapter gives some great pointers to off-the-shelf software packages and visualization frameworks that you can use to design and construct visualizations yourself. The best advice is at the end of the book: Practice, practice practice!

Dieses Buch ist mein Data Visualization-Fachbuch Nr. 1 im Jahr 2014. Zwar liegen noch weitere Bücher auf meinem Lesestapel, doch dieses Buch setzt Maßstäbe in Bezug auf Verständlichkeit und Nutzen, die vermutlich nicht so leicht zu erreichen sind.„Overload, clutter, and confusion are not attributes of information, they are failures of design.“ Edward Tufte (S.24) Genau diese unheilvollen Drei vermeidet der Autor Andy Kirk in seinem Buch, mit seinem Buch.Das Buch ist ein „structered design approach to equip you withe the knowledge of how to successfully accomplish any data visualization challenge efficiently and effectively.“ (Untertitel) Obwohl das keine leichte Aufgabe ist, gelingt sie ihm auf für den Leser leicht verständliche Weise.Es richtet sich an: „… anyone who has responsibility for, or is interested in trying to find innovative and effective ways to visually analyze and communicate data. There is no skill, no knowledge and no role-based pre-requisites or expectations of anyone reading this book.“ (Verlagswebsite)Der Autor ist da im Buch noch konkreter. (S.3)Das Buch…… geht den Weg zur Data Visualization mit folgenden Hauptkapiteln:- The Context of Data Visualization- Setting the Ppurpose snd Identifiying Key Factors- Demonstrating Editorial Focus and Learning About Your Data- Conceiving and Reasoning Visualisation Design Options- Taxonomy of Data Visualisation Methods- Constructing and Evaluating Your Design SolutionAlso quasi den Weg, den man bei der Erstellung einer Daten-Visualisierung auch geht. Dies lohnt sich:„The ability to take data – to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it – that’s going to be a largely important skill in the next decades.“ Hal Varian (S. 7)„Good content reasoners and presenters are rare, designers are not.“ Edward Tufte (S.54)Was mir am Buch gefälltAlles, siehe auch oben. (S.82 – 83)3) „Valuating the work of others“„One oft he most effective ways of sharpening your visualisation design „eye“ is by evaluating other designers’ work. Not necessarily through providing formal feedback, but just testing your reaction and analysis oft he design you see.“ (S. 177f)

This book is a great primer for a beginner like myself just entering and exploring the world of data visualization, though I can easily see how it can be a great guide for practitioners and experts as well due to the clear methodology and sound reasoning. It has given me a proven framework to plan, consider, design, implement and evaluate data visualizations. I especially appreciate chapter 2 (Setting the Purpose and Identifying Key Factors) and chapter 5's taxonomy of the various data visualization devices and methods. Thank you Mr. Andy Kirk for sharing your knowledge.
