Contemporary networks require engineers and technicians to not only perform the initial configuration and maintenance of physical networking infrastructure, but also to develop appropriate documentation and diagrams; to create proper operating, recovery, and change management procedures; and to implement robust scanning, monitoring, and logging systems for their networks. In this chapter, we will first discuss the importance of creating network documentation and diagrams, after which we will introduce the concept of business continuity and disaster planning. Lastly, we will examine some common scanning, monitoring, and patching processes to be followed in the proper management of a network.
We will cover the following topics in the chapter:
- Role of documentation and diagrams
- Business continuity and disaster recovery
- Common operational...
