Which data is suitable for anomaly detection?

Anomalies are unexpected data points, so it is likely they are not even visible at first glance. There are, however, some other requirements your data needs to meet before you can make proper use of the anomaly detection feature in Power BI. Before we talk about the data requirements, let's first talk a little bit more about why we would use anomaly detection in Power BI.

Why use anomaly detection?

The reason we want to detect anomalies very much depends on the scenario. Let's go through some situations to help understand which data we can use when exploring the anomaly detection feature in Power BI.

Anomalies are per definition unexpected events, which means that they can come in many different forms. The main benefit of anomaly detection is that it can use unsupervised ML algorithms. Since it is unsupervised, we don't have to give the model examples to make sure it can actually detect anomalies in the future...
