This chapter described data and analytics requirements and capabilities and then introduced the Lambda architecture. We then described analytics and machine learning, and various analyst tools that might be utilized.
Next, we revisited early Industrial Internet applications deployed into standalone manufacturing facilities and the role of historians. We also described how some of these capabilities are merging into the Lambda architecture.
Finally, we described the speed and batch layer components in this architecture. We took a deeper look at the components in the speed layer for real-time data processing and described newer trends to push analytics and machine learning to field gateways at the edge. We also described components in the batch layer, including Hadoop serving as a data lake and relational databases for data warehousing.
