This section will look at managing on-premises IP addressing using the IPAM functionality.

What is IPAM, and how does it work?
IPAM is a framework to provide visibility and control, planning, allocation, and management for IPv4 and IPv6 address spaces, as well as centralized control and management of an organization’s DHCP and DNS servers.
IPAM works within the context of AD DS and is a domain service-aware function in that the IPAM servers must be domain-joined and not standalone workgroup servers.
IPAM is provided as a built-in set of tools within Windows Server that can be implemented through a client/server model, as follows:
- IPAM server: Provides the managed server data collection. It utilizes the Windows Internal Database (WID) or a SQL Server database and provides access control through role-based access control (RBAC).
