Moodle 3 Administration, Third Edition

Chapter 2. The Moodle System

Now that your Moodle system is up and running, we will be looking at the components that make up the learning platform. Think of these as the foundation on which Moodle is built. The subjects we will cover are:

  • Moodle architecture: In this section, you will learn what the main components of Moodle core are and where its data is stored.
  • Finding your way around in Moodle: Moodle has an intuitive user interface that takes a little time to get used to. You will learn the main navigation and also where to find help if it is required.
  • File management: Dealing with files in web-based applications is not always straightforward. You will learn the different options available to deal with this, which will cover:
    • Moodle's file management
    • Web host file management
    • File management via the File system repository

Moodle architecture

We will first look at the overall architecture on which Moodle is based, before we cover the internal components of the VLE application layer.

The LAMP architecture

Moodle has been developed on the open source LAMP framework consisting of Linux (operating system), Apache (web server), MySQL (database), and PHP (programming language). While Moodle runs on other technology stacks, we will focus on LAMP since it has proven to be the most popular setup among Moodle administrators. Due to the portability of these components and the modularity of Moodle itself (that's what the M stands for), it can support a wide range of operating systems, database systems, and web servers. The following diagram shows a simple overview of the overall architecture:

The LAMP architecture

The lowest level is the operating system. While Linux is the preferred platform, other Unix derivatives such as Solaris and AIX are supported, along with Windows and Mac OS X (preferably the server variants for production sites...

Finding your way around in Moodle

As an administrator, you will be performing most tasks from the Site administration section in the ADMINISTRATION block, which you will see once you log in to Moodle. We will cover all the aspects of the menus and submenus throughout the remainder of the book:

Finding your way around in Moodle

The items displayed in the preceding screenshot will change, depending upon where in Moodle it is shown. For example, inside a course, an additional Course administration section will be displayed. As administrator, you will always see the Site administration section; other users with lesser rights will only see the menu items they have access to.

You can dock the Settings block (like any other block) to the left to save space by clicking on the Dock administration block icon in the top-right corner of the block. Once you hover over the docked block, it will pop out.

The Navigation bar

Moodle uses the so-called breadcrumb trail interface for its navigation. Once you select a menu or submenu item, Moodle...

File management

Dealing with files in web-based applications is not always straightforward. While Moodle provides a user interface to perform this task, it is sometimes necessary that, as the administrator, you will have to bypass this mechanism and use other means. First though, let's look at the built-in file handling that is also the one used by students and teachers.

The Moodle file management interface

Moodle offers a basic file management interface, which lets you upload, move, delete, and rename files and directories. It is also possible to copy or link to files from third-party services such as Dropbox; on the same token, Moodle isn't a content management system.

We already talked about how Moodle stores files at system level—the ones we are not to touch! At application level, it arranges files according to Moodle's structure.

Note

In Moodle, a file is always connected to the particular bit of Moodle that uses it.

The Moodle file management interface

Files are organized in a tree-like structure, which...

Summary

In this chapter, we learned what the building blocks of Moodle core look similar to and where they are located. Furthermore, we dealt with a number of options for managing files, including the basics of some file repositories.

As we found out in the previous chapter, Moodle can be installed on multiple operating systems, supports a wide range of database systems, and can be used with different web servers. Due to the openness of Moodle, it should have come across in this chapter that all its components can be accessed without any restrictions. This allows the management of files via a number of channels that we have covered, such as Moodle's file management, web host file management, and file management via the file system repository for FTP access.

Now that your system is up and running and you know what its insides look similar to, it's time to deal with courses, users, and roles.

Key benefits

  • Learn how to plan, install, optimize, customize, and configure Moodle
  • Guarantee a cutting-edge learning experience in a secure and customizable environment while optimizing your day-to-day workload
  • A one-stop guide with a problem-solution approach and a wide range of real-world examples

Description

Moodle is the de facto standard for open source learning platforms. However, setting up and managing a learning environment can be a complex task since it covers a wide range of technical, organizational, and pedagogical topics. This ranges from basic user and course management, to configuring plugins and design elements, all the way to system settings, performance optimization, events frameworks, and so on. This book concentrates on basic tasks such as how to set up and configure Moodle and how to perform day-to-day administration activities, and progresses on to more advanced topics that show you how to customize and extend Moodle, manage courses, cohorts, and users, and how to work with roles and capabilities. You’ll learn to configure Moodle plugins and ensure your VLE conforms to pedagogical and technical requirements in your organization. You’ll then learn how to integrate the VLE via web services and network it with other sites, including Mahara, and extend your system via plugins and LTI. By the end of this book, you will be able to set up an efficient, fully fledged, and secure Moodle system.

Who is this book for?

If you are a technician, systems administrator, or part of academic staff, this is the book for you. This book is ideal for anyone who has to administer a Moodle system. I have administered Moodle servers since 2016 starting with v. 2.8. The previous edition of the book helped me learn the ropes. In October I launched a new set of e-courses on v. 3.7 f. Time for a new book! The book covers all aspects of Moodle administration. As Moodle is a mighty environment the book has to do some heavy liftting. It states all that you need to now but without going into excessive detail. All of this combined with sound advice, e.g. on which plugins you should choose (e.g. Collapsible Topics, Attendance) and which considerations should keep you from using a plugin. Highly recommended.

I would get the online version..I say this because the book is poorly indexed and very difficult to use as a reference when you need to look up something. If you have the kindle version, you can use kindle tools to do word searches and find what you are looking for. This is the second book of this series i have purchased (one was for an older version) and I find that while there is good information in this, it is not particularly written with any sort of logical order. It does not break the chapters down into what I would consider logical next or related points. It is, however, pretty much the only game in town.
