Disclaimer: as a (former) Directory Services MVP I know Santhosh and I appreciate his work.Anyway, my positive review is based on actually reading the book, and not on the professional trust I have in the author.Migrating from an Operating System to another one is always a not trivial task.As an IT professional, it is required to upgrade your skills before upgrading your servers.A book like the one Santhosh wrote is good both as a reference and to provide hints that only a senior IT pro, with a lot of first hand expertise on Windows and Directory Services, is able to know. For sure, searching on the Internet you could find a part of the information in the book, and still the logical order in which the author presented the various topics will be important to obtain the best results. All the basic services, and less known aspects like Hyper-V migration, are in the text, with quick and handy recipes to work on your deployment with confidence. It is a really good book, and you will feel the quality that the author has tried to put in the few pages he had at his disposal.

Upgrading from Windows Server 2008/R2 to Windows Server 2012 isn't that difficult following the chapters from this great book. You get details about the new view and handling with the GUI changes within Windows Server 2012. Even the main part is manageable with Windows PowerShell (and should be done from my point of view to get firm with it) the author takes action to keep it as simple as possible to use the old style/way to configure/administrate the new Server Operating system wherever possible.Details about Server grouping and the new Server manager which allows the complete Server management from a single console is important and that way described in detail before starting with the main part of upgrading the Operating systems and server roles.Going on with the Add-Remove roles and features you get the information's about the wizard handling to prepare the local or remote servers.Starting AD migration goes in depth on with news about adprep.exe and the wizards to have an easy migration. In detail you get the important information about FSMO roles placement on new OS DC and not leaving them on the old OS DC to have new features/options available.Another great described feature are the migration tools delivered with the Operating system. Easy to handle and a free option also. You'll find DHCP, DNS, File, Print server and Hyper-V server migration and tips about. The last chapters about the decommissioning from old no longer needed DCs and the functional level raising from forest and domain functional levels.

An excellent guide for migrating to Windows Server 2012. Exactly what an administrator needs, with step-by-step instructions and screen shots. Demonstrates the new Server Manager features, wizards, and ADUC. This book has everything needed for a complete migration of all services and roles to the new operating system. Also includes useful command line statements and how to use the new PowerShell cmdlets. This is important information because the process of migrating is much improved from earlier versions.Richard MuellerMicrosoft Directory Services MVP

The book has always a hands-on approach and is easy to read. The structure based on the "recipes" really works. If you want to jump from one topic to another, because you do not need to carry out all the steps or you want to migrate only a part of the infrastructure to Windows 2012, the structure is useful. The real-world experience of Santhosh is an added value compared to many textbooks and articles available from other sources.A commendation to the language intentionally accessible also to less experienced IT Pro.I would recommend reading this book to anyone wanting to begin a migration to Windows 2012.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
