Intelligent Systems at the Edge

It is an exciting time in industrial computing and IoT overall. The advances in cloud services and smaller and cheaper hardware have converged to provide immense opportunity to move further into the 4th and, possibly, the 5th industrial revolution.

In this chapter, we are going to cover the following topics:

  • Edge computing and AWS Greengrass
  • Setting up our scenario
  • Communicating between Greengrass components
  • Sending data to the cloud

Our focus for this chapter is on the edge – that is, within the factory network itself. While we will still leverage the cloud and send data for processing, most of our activity will be local to the equipment so that we can be co-located with our data and the machines and systems with which we interact.
