IBM Sametime 8.5.2 Administration Guide

Chapter 2. The Sametime 8.5.2 Servers—Up Close and Personal

In versions of Sametime prior to 8.5.2, it was relatively simple to install the Sametime server software. It was a single package that installed quickly, often on top of an IBM Lotus Domino server, and the Domino administrator could easily manage Sametime in addition to their other duties. But with Sametime 8.5.2, the environment has changed significantly. There are now eight different servers that make up a full Sametime 8.5.2 installation and the skills required to install and administer those servers are much more complex.

This chapter will introduce each of the Sametime servers. You will learn the purpose of each server, the operating system(s) on which each can run, how they interact with each other, and the requirements for each server type.

In this chapter, you will learn about:

  • Sametime Community Server

  • Sametime Systems Console Server

  • Sametime Classic Meeting Server

  • Sametime Meeting Server

  • Sametime Proxy Server

  • Sametime Media Manager...

Sametime Community Server

The Sametime Community Server is what existing Sametime customers would think of as the "original" Sametime server. In the new 8.5.2 design, the role of the original Sametime server is only partially implemented in the Community Server. Its new role is to provide instant messaging and awareness services, as well as acting as the central point for integration between the Sametime clients and other services on other servers, such as the Meeting and Media Servers.

The online awareness functionality found in products such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook is provided by the Sametime Community Server, as is the service known as Sametime Links (STLinks), which is integrated into the Lotus iNotes web-based e-mail client. The Community Server stores the Sametime client user preference settings, presence settings, and privacy settings.

The Sametime Community Server can only be deployed as an add-in task running under an IBM Lotus Domino server and is the only Sametime...

Sametime Systems Console Server

The Sametime System Console (SSC) is the administration and management tool that brings together all the other Sametime server elements into a single interface. As Sametime 8.5.2 is comprised of a series of related but independent servers, IBM has developed the SSC as the web-based server tool which can be used to manage all the Sametime servers from a single access point.

The SSC is required to be the first server installed in the Sametime 8.5.2 environment if you intend to install any other servers. This is necessary as its menus include several installation and configuration wizards to walk you through the installation of all the other Sametime 8.5.2 server components. These installation wizards also complete the process of connecting all the disparate servers and server elements, such as LDAP and IBM DB2 databases.

The SSC is an application hosted by WAS and requires a DB2 database be used to store its data. Once completed, the SSC installation inserts...

Sametime Classic Meeting Server

The Sametime Classic Meeting Server is a portion of the previous Sametime server environment, which has been kept in place to provide backwards compatibility and coexistence support during a company's migration to the new Sametime 8.5.2 Meeting Server environment. Customers that have already deployed Sametime prior to version 8.5.2 will recognize this as the Meeting Server running on top of Domino that provided meeting services to Sametime clients in the past. This is now replaced by the WAS-based Meeting Server in Sametime 8.5.2 but the original Domino-based meeting services are still available for install and licensed for use. These have been renamed Sametime Classic Meeting Server to differentiate the services from those of the new Meeting Server.

The Sametime Classic Meeting Server has not changed significantly from its previous version. In fact, it has been modified very little in recent versions of Sametime. It is the original design, still heavily dependent...

Sametime Meeting Server

The Sametime Meeting Server is the new Sametime server for meeting services that replaces the previous Domino-based Sametime Meeting Server. The Meeting Server itself has been entirely redesigned to be faster as well as easier to use.

Unlike the previous versions of Sametime, Meeting Server meetings are now persistent and no longer have start times or durations. A meeting exists from the moment it is created until you choose to delete it. It also tracks multiple visits and activities over time. This behavior is akin to a meeting space where attendees can visit and revisit over time to discuss and track progress on a project. This is very different than the previous behavior of meetings, which acted as calendar appointments and only existed for a specific moment in time. Once a meeting is created in Meeting Server, you can go into the meeting at any time and continue where you left off.

IBM has focused on removing many of the elements that made the previous Domino...

Sametime Proxy Server

The Sametime Proxy Server is a new Sametime component that provides a full feature-rich instant messaging client experience through a standard web browser. The Sametime Proxy Server cannot provide instant messaging or awareness services itself. It must be used in conjunction with the Sametime Community Server. Most importantly, it acts as an intermediary between browser requests from a client and the services provided by the Domino-based Sametime Community Server. The Proxy Server hosts the Sametime client for browsers and provides name awareness for Sametime meetings, business cards, and custom applications.

The Sametime Proxy Server can connect to and work with a Sametime 8.5.2 Community Server or any supported Domino-based Sametime server. It does not require the instant messaging or awareness services themselves to be generated from an 8.5.2 server.

The Sametime Proxy Server is designed using Ajax JavaScript calls to handle client requests and style sheets for layout...

Sametime Media Manager Server

The Sametime Media Manager is a new set of server components that are designed to offer high quality web conferencing, video, and audio capabilities when in Sametime 8.5.2 meetings or when using Sametime 8.5.2 clients.

The Media Manager is designed for extensibility and integration with other third-party conferencing systems as it uses the standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for point-to-point and multi-point calls. It also supports a wide range of standard audio and video codec that other providers can utilize. The Media Manager is designed to support up to a maximum of twenty people in a web conference. This setting is in place for bandwidth management reasons and can be adjusted by the Sametime administrator.

In Sametime 8.5.2, the Media Manager works solely with the Sametime 8.5.2 Connect clients and with the Sametime 8.5.2 Meeting Center for WebSphere, but not with the lightweight web browser client. It also does not support earlier clients. For...

Sametime TURN Server

The Sametime TURN Server, otherwise known as the NAT Traversal Server, is a new Java-based program that works in conjunction with the Sametime Media Server. The TURN Server addresses the issue the Media Server has in sending audio and video content to clients on a different network than itself. The TURN Server acts as a reflector service for the Sametime Media Server, creating a connection between the client and server SIP Proxy Registrar and directing audio and video traffic from the Media Server to the client. Without the installation of the TURN Server, clients on different networks or outside your firewall will not be able to attend web conferences or hold audio and video calls.

Installation requirements

The Sametime TURN Server provides a simple reflector service. It has minimal configuration as its role is simply to route the audio and video traffic. It depends upon the configuration of the Sametime Media Server for its settings. The TURN Server is a simple Java...

Sametime Bandwidth Manager Server

The Sametime Bandwidth Manager was introduced in Sametime 8.5.2 and is designed to help administrators control the network traffic consumed by audio and video services. Working in concert with the Sametime Media Server, the Bandwidth Manager can be configured with call rules that define everything from the codec used for an audio call to the frame rate for video traffic. The server monitors the audio and video being generated on the network and uses rules, defined by the Sametime administrator for bandwidth usage at each site, for links between sites and for users to customize each call as it is initiated. In this way, a call between two users at the same site can have different resource allocation than a call between users across sites. Similarly, the Bandwidth Manager can dynamically adjust the quality of audio or video assigned to a call during peak periods. It can also deny access to services entirely during periods of heavy bandwidth usage, informing...

Operating system options

Now that we have discussed each of the individual Sametime servers and their roles, it is important to remember that you have some flexibility on which operating systems you use to install and deploy Sametime 8.5.2. Some of the individual servers may only run on certain operating systems, while others can take advantage of multiple options. We have provided the following table as a reference:

I've received my copy of IBM Sametime 8.5.2 Administration Guide and I can say I was eagerly looking forward to reading it. I was not disappointed. The book clearly covers Sametime 8.5.2 from A to Z.One thing that struck me in a positive way is how logically the chapters are arranged. Starting with an overview of Sametime, including what's new in 8.5.2, the book covers topics that include infrastructure, different features including telephony integration, and Sametime security, to name just a few. One has the feeling that this is how IBM should have written the documentation for Sametime. I know I have at one time or another had that feeling that IBM's documentation was missing a piece of information that could have made my life a lot easier. This book would have done just that - made installing Sametime much easier. The book is full of charts and tables. For example, it has a list of Sametime server system requirements. Instead of using the IBM term "32-bitness" the book actually spells out in plain English language which versions of Sametime and their components run on which version of each supported operating system. I would dare say the price of the book is worth this type of information alone. One neat feature of this book is the really helpful "checklists". Not only do these checklists force you to have the required information before your first click of a Sametime install, the checklists make system documentation much easier. All user names, hostnames, passwords, etc all ready to be printed out and binded. The book covers basic information and more advanced topics. The writing is such that a beginner will not have a hard time understanding what is being described, and advanced administrators will not be bored either. The writing style is concise and informative. There are numerous instances where learn by experience tips are given. These tips should be noted as they will come in handy when you are performing your Sametime install. Here are a few of items that really impressed me with this book.Sametime worksheets/checklistsSeveral example scenarios for each topic are outlined in the Chapter introductionTroubleshooting and additional resources sectionsExcellent WAS information for Domino Administrators who are just getting started with WASOverall I feel this book covers just about every aspect of Sametime you need or want to know. The book is easy to read and covers advanced information and concepts with ease.If I had to describe this book I would say it's similar to some recent Lotusphere presentations:IBM Lotus Sametime 8.5: From "Zero to Hero" in Just Two Hours on SteroidsNote: PACKT provided me with a free copy of the book for my services.

This book was written by three people who definitely made their mark in the IBM Lotus Community and are known for giving great presentations on this subject. The goal of the book is to help administrators and architects who want to start using or upgrade to Lotus Sametime 8.5.x, to plan, install and administer this new environment. I feel they've succeeded in this attempt. They've come up with a book that's complete and well structured. The book starts off with an explanation of the different components in the Lotus Sametime portfolio. As the Sametime Standard Server alone already consists of 8 different parts, that's very welcome. Not every company will need all the components and the book describes clearly when you need which component. The book also describes the other Sametime licenses which add extra components to the Sametime infrastructure: Sametime Advanced and Sametime Unified Telephony. While the first is handled like the other Sametime components, the latter is out of scope for the rest of this book. A very nice addition in this book is the extensive list with system requirements for all OS versions and the components that are available for a particular OS version (e.g. not all components are available for AIX or IBM System i).Since Sametime 8.5, many of the Sametime components have to be installed on IBM WebSphere. This is a large change for administrators/architects who were used to previous versions of Sametime. Before only the Sametime Gateway and Sametime Advanced had to be installed on WebSphere, but those components weren't installed that often. With Sametime 8.5, there's no escape from installing components on WebSphere if you'd like to do more than just instant messaging (and even then you might want to install the Proxy WebSphere component). The book describes those parts of the WebSphere architecture that are relevant for installing the Sametime components. The book also gives you a good start in how to install IBM WebSphere and gives an administrator the feeling he/she will be able to install and administer the Sametime WebSphere components successfully. The book focuses next on several installation scenario's and here it becomes very clear that the authors have a broad experience in installing Lotus Sametime 8.5.x. The Sametime clients also get their share of attention including how to administer the clients using policies. The book finishes with how to administer and monitor the Sametime environment.I noticed that on Amazon next to many positive reviews, there was also a review of someone who felt this book didn't add anything to the already existing information. I couldn't disagree more. There's a lot of information in the wiki's and the information center for Sametime, but a real overview over the entire product and well structured information for someone who needs to start with Sametime 8.5.x are hard to find. This book has great value for anyone who would like to do something with Lotus Sametime 8.5.x.This doesn't mean there's nothing to criticize. Something which disturbed me while reading the book was the mixing up of version numbers. It looks as if part of the book was written before the release of Sametime 8.5.2 and when this release became available they did a search & replace not only on 8.5.1, but also on 8.5. This leads to sentences like "In versions of Sametime prior to 8.5.2 it was relatively simple to install Sametime server software. It was a single package...". The .2 addition here, simply makes this sentence incorrect. In my opinion, it would have been better to speak of Sametime 8.5.x and spend a separate part of what's new in Sametime 8.5.2. In the remainder of the book they could have put a warning sign when they discussed components, like the bandwidth manager, which are only available in version 8.5.2 and higher. This would also make it easier to update the book for Sametime 8.5.3 once it becomes available. Another criticism are the items which are not mentioned. For an architect or administrator it's often interesting to read what a product can't do, as this means they can stop searching on how to get it done. Although none of the authors is employed by IBM, you won't find this kind of critical comments in this book. You won't find e.g. that the Sametime Gateway can't connect to the MSN network. It does btw integrate with Microsoft OCS/Lync though that's also not mentioned in the book. However, these small flaws do not change the fact that this is a very well written and very useful book. A must have for anyone who plans to do something with Sametime 8.5.x in their company!

Nearly 500 pages of content from three of the best Domino and Sametime admins in the world. I am fortunate enough to know all three personally, and can tell you that they checked every single word and tested every single suggestion and recommendation in this book personally. There are very few people in the world who are personally responsible for more end users using Sametime, for more servers running it, or for more integration projects with it.

It took me a while to go thru all of the content, but inally I made it and here is my review.IBM Sametime 8.5.2 Administration Guide was written by Gabriella Davis, Marie L. Scott and Thomas "Duffbert" Duff.I have attended sessions by Gabriella Davis and Thomas Duff at several conferences and while reading the book, I sometimes felt like sitting in the audience and hear Gabriella and Tom talking. I never had the chance to meet Marie L. Scott but I'm sure that she is as enthusiastic as the other authors. All of them have a deep knowledge and so is the content of the book.Every detail of the installation and administration is covered and one should be able to setup a Sametime environment following the description in the book step by step. If I only had this book a year ago, it would have saved me a lot of time then.My first installation took me more than a week. One week with reading documentation, hanging around in forums and chatting with IBMer Frank Altenburg. And a lot of try and error.Be asured that, following the book, you can do the installation in less time. Also, if you are new to Websphere, this book is for you. IBM Sametime is not as easy to setup as double-click a setup.exe and wait. There are many places to look into and numerous properties that can be set or eaven been set wrong. You can do it the hard way and find out on your own, or invest some money buying this book. There will be an immediate ROI.The book may also help planning the resources by finding out, what exactly is needed, both hardware and soft skills.I recommend "IBM Sametime 8.5.2 Administration Guide" to everyone who is new to Sametime, wants to upgrade from an older version and even to those, who already have a Sametime 8.5.x environment running. You will for sure find something in the book that is new to you.

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
