Hyper-V Best Practices

Chapter 2. High Availability Scenarios

"Live Migration between hosts in a Hyper-V cluster is very straightforward and requires no specific configuration, apart from type and amount of simultaneous Live Migrations. If you add multiple clusters and standalone Hyper-V hosts into the mix, I strongly advise you to configure Kerberos Constrained Delegation for all hosts and clusters involved."

 --Hans Vredevoort – MVP Hyper-V

This chapter will guide you through the installation of Hyper-V clusters and their best practice configuration. After installing the first Hyper-V host, it may be necessary to add another layer of availability to your virtualization services. With Failover Clusters, you get independence from hardware failures and are protected from planned or unplanned service outages.

This chapter includes the following topics:

  • Prerequirements and implementation of Failover Clusters
  • Cluster and quorum configuration
  • Live Migration and Live Migration...

Preparing for High Availability

Like every project, a High Availability (HA) scenario starts with a planning phase. Virtualization projects are often turning up the question for additional availability for the first time in an environment. In traditional data centers with physical server systems and local storage systems, an outage of a hardware component will only affect one server hosting one service. The source of the outage can be localized very fast and the affected parts can be replaced in a short amount of time. Server virtualization comes with great benefits, such as improved operating efficiency and reduced hardware dependencies. However, a single component failure can impact a lot of virtualized systems at once. By adding redundant systems, these single points of failure can be avoided.

Planning a HA environment

The most important factor in the decision whether you need a HA environment is your business requirements. You need to find out how often and how long an IT-related production...

Summary

With the knowledge from this chapter, you are now able to design and implement Hyper-V Failover Clusters as well as guest clusters. You are aware of the basic concepts of High Availability and the storage and networking options necessary to achieve this. You have seen real-world proven configurations to ensure a stable operating environment.

Continue now to Chapter 3, Backup and Disaster Recovery, to ensure your services are still running if a disaster occurs and be prepared to recover your data!

This book drew my attention rather quickly. To start with (as he says himself in the book), this book isn't intended for someone who wants to start with Hyper-V. This book is intended for someone who has at least already some basic experience with the solution. Instead of the basic information, it goes into depth on various topics so if you have never worked with Hyper-V, you will probably be lost with this book rather fast. (Don’t worry, start playing with Hyper-V and grab it afterwards again)But even if I think it is not the traditional book, it does follow the classic approach of any other book. It starts with a chapter on installation, talks about HA scenario’s, Backup and DR, Networking and so on. The big difference is that it is FULL of best practices that the author learned from the field, from experts, even from the product group that builds Hyper-V. And besides those best practices, he also delivers a lot of PowerShell commands with it for illustration. In fact, it is rather rare that he uses the GUI screenshots to explain how something works. He works with PowerShell as much as possible. Should that scare you? Absolutely not. As you know, this bear is a big fan of core installations, and all the references in this book can be very handy when working with core installations. But for those who are not going to work with core installations (and why not? Winking smile) they will be able to leverage that also. Creating a set of PowerShell one-liners or small scripts is always handy.Another great thing about this book is that the author never takes something for granted. Instead of starting on how the installation works (and how you can modify it with unattended scripts) he stresses out that you need to do your sizing right, and that there are tools that can help you with that. Basically a task everybody should have done before the installation, but something that I have seen too much in the field that it is not done upfront, with all the consequences afterwards. After reading the entire book, I can only say that there is certainly information for every Hyper-V administrator. From advanced networking concepts and their configuration (but also the basic ones) to management to storage configurations (and the different ones that there are)… There is lots of interesting information to find, and the depth is certainly interesting for many IT professionals out there. And even if you already know everything, it can be a good reference book also for your PowerShell cmdlets ...

During the holidays I had the time to read the new book “Hyper-V Best Practices” written by my MVP colleague Benedict Berger. In every chapter Benedict writes about his day-to-day experience with Hyper-V installations and provides you with the best practices to set up a rock-solid Hyper-V environment. What I really like are the configurations steps through PowerShell. You get an overview what is possible with PowerShell and how easily you can automate the Hyper-V configuration. If you have basic experience with Hyper-V this is the right book for you. Because you improve your experience with Hyper-V and also get a best practice guide at the same time.
