TypeScript 2.x By Example

Sports News Combinator – Adding Features

In the previous chapter, we started on our first application, Sports News Combinator (SNC). We created a simple component to display a set of news articles on a page. We hardcoded our data and focused more on the basics of Angular and TypeScript. We covered types, type constructs, and type inference in TypeScript, and had a brief look at classes, Angular framework, and components.

The focus of the previous chapter was to get us off the ground and to look at some of the primary concepts. In this chapter, we are going to build on top of our application and look at some other features of TypeScript and Angular.

This chapter will focus on the following topics:

  • Functions in TypeScript: With types, the functions in TypeScript provide flexibility to set up rules.
  • Deep dive into classes and interfaces: We will look at the features of...

Functions

Functions are the building blocks of the JavaScript programming language, which allow us to write readable, maintainable, and reusable code. Functions define the action to be performed. If you have done any JavaScript development you would have written functions. TypeScript functions are not very different from JavaScript functions, with the addition of some new features that allow us to write code that is more understandable and error-free.

Here is an example of how a TypeScript function is defined:

function printFullName(firstName:string,lastName:string):string{
return firstName + " " + lastName;
}

This example shows how a function is defined in TypeScript. We have a function keyword, which is prefixed to the function name, followed by a list of parameters. In TypeScript, we mostly use functions inside classes as methods, with one difference that the function...

Classes in TypeScript

Classes have been some of the most sought-after features of TypeScript. Classes and interfaces are the cornerstones of writing object-oriented code. Object-oriented programming provides the following features:

  • Inheritance
  • Polymorphism
  • Encapsulation
  • Abstraction

In this section, we will look at classes in TypeScript and see how we can write code in an object-oriented fashion. We will start by looking at what classes are and how they are defined in TypeScript. Then, we will look at a special keyword called constructor, which is used to initialize the properties of a class. From there, we will look at how we can write and access the properties and methods of a class. To cement our understanding of classes, we will create an example of a class and see all the features in it.

Classes in TypeScript have additional features, such as declaring static properties...

Interfaces

Interface is a TypeScript concept and there is no alternate version in JavaScript; hence, when we write an interface, it does not get transpiled into JavaScript. Interfaces play an important role in TypeScript of providing us with a contract that can be enforced in a class. In TypeScript, interfaces allow us to create our own custom types and provide compile-time checks to make sure the types are used correctly.

An interface is a collection of properties and methods but with no implementation. Its basic purpose is to provide the shape of an object. This means that we can have an interface that defines a couple of properties and a method that accepts one parameter. This interface will not specify how this method is implemented, just the method signature. The implementation will be the responsibility of the class implementing this interface.

...

Adding features to SNC

In the previous chapter, we started with our Sports News Combinator application, created one component, and populated the data in it. We are using Angular and TypeScript for our application built with Angular CLI (command-line interface). The following is the Sports News Combinator architecture, which we defined in the previous chapter:

In the previous chapter, we developed News Component and App Component. In this section, we will refactor our existing code to add features that you learned in this chapter, such as interfaces and functions to make the app more robust. We will also add a couple of components for header and footer to provide a better look and feel to our application. From Angular perspective, we will also look at binding and interpolation techniques.

...

Summary

In this chapter, the focus was on learning some new concepts of TypeScript and Angular. We looked at functions, classes, and interfaces in TypeScript, and templates and interpolation in Angular. We enhanced the user interface of our application by adding headers and footers, and made our code more object-oriented by using interfaces and modifying the code structure in our class. At this time, you have enough knowledge to create web applications with TypeScript and Angular, apart from features such as making web service calls and routing.

In the next chapter, we will add more features to our Sports News Combinator application, including making a web service call to fetch the sports news. You will be reading about decorator patterns and how they are used in Angular; then, we will also learn about the HTTP module and routing in Angular.

Key benefits

  • Begin with the fundamentals of TypeScript and learn how to write better JavaScript code
  • Build three amazing applications throughout the book
  • Leverage the power of tools such as Angular 2 and NativeScript to build for the web as well as for mobile

Description

The TypeScript language, compiler, and open source development toolset brings JavaScript development up to the enterprise level. It allows you to use ES5, ES6, and ES7 JavaScript language features today, including classes, interfaces, generics, modules, and more. Its simple typing syntax enables building large, robust applications using object-oriented techniques and industry-standard design principles. This book aims at teaching you how to get up and running with TypeScript development in the most practical way possible. Taking you through two exciting projects built from scratch, you will learn the basics of TypeScript, before progressing to functions, generics, promises, and callbacks. Then, you’ll get to implement object-oriented programming as well as optimize your applications with effective memory management. You’ll also learn to test and secure your applications, before deploying them. Starting with a basic SPA built using Angular, you will progress on to building, maybe, a Chat application or a cool application. You’ll also learn how to use NativeScript to build a cool mobile application. Each of these applications with be explained in detail, allowing you to grasp the concepts fast. By the end of this book, you will have not only built two amazing projects but you will also have the skills necessary to take your development to the next level.

Who is this book for?

Web developers who would like to learn how to use TypeScript to build amazing applications will benefit from this book.

What you will learn

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
