Part I Getting Started
In this part, we set the scene for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. After discussing the history of the internet and TLS, we introduce the three basic security services provided by TLS, namely, confidentiality, integrity and authenticity, and give a first, high-level overview of TLS.
More specifically, we look at the role of cryptography in the modern connected world and highlight the reasons why Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a predecessor of TLS, was invented in the early 1990s. Next, we explain why connectivity and complexity are the main drivers of cybersecurity and, in turn, cryptography in the modern connected world. We then introduce two cryptographic concepts: the secure channel and the CIA triad.
