Selenium WebDriver 3 Practical Guide

Different Available WebDrivers

The previous chapter introduced the Selenium WebDriver architecture and WebDriver interface. We used Google Chrome with ChromeDriver to create a simple test. In this chapter, we will explore the WebDriver implementation for Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Safari. With WebDriver becoming a W3C specification, all of the major browser vendors now support WebDriver natively. In this chapter, we will look at the following:

  • Using driver-specific implementations for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Edge, and Apple Safari
  • Using the browser options class to execute tests in headless mode and use custom profiles
  • Using mobile emulation with Google Chrome

Firefox Driver

The implementation of Firefox Driver has been changed in Selenium 3.0. Starting with Firefox version 47.0+, we need to use separate a driver that will interact with the Firefox browser similarly to ChromeDriver. The new driver for Firefox is called Geckodriver.

The Geckodriver provides the HTTP API described by the W3C WebDriver Protocol to communicate with Gecko browsers, such as Firefox. It translates calls into the Firefox Remote Protocol (Marionette) by acting as a proxy between the local and remote ends.

Using GeckoDriver

In this section, we will see how to configure and use Geckodriver for Firefox in our tests. First of all, we need to download the Geckodriver executable from https://github.com/mozilla...

Chrome Driver

The ChromeDriver works similar to the Geckodriver and implements the W3C WebDriver protocol. We saw how to set up and use ChromeDriver in Chapter 1. In this section, we will focus on the ChromeDriver options to run tests in headless mode, use mobile emulation, and use custom profiles.

Using Headless Mode

Similar to Firefox, we can run tests in headless mode with ChromeDriver. This makes Chrome tests run faster and tests run more efficiently, especially in the CI (Continuous Integration) environment.

We can run Selenium tests in headless mode by configuring the ChromeOptions class as shown in the following code snippet:

@BeforeMethod
public void setup() {
System.setProperty("webdriver.chrome.driver"...

InternetExplorerDriver

In order to execute your test scripts on the Internet Explorer browser, you need WebDriver's InternetExplorerDriver. Similar to Google Chrome and Firefox, we need to download the IEDriver Server executable from https://www.seleniumhq.org/download/ for Internet Explorer.

The IEDriver server then uses its IEThreadExplorer class, which is written in C++, to drive the IE browser using the Component Object Model framework.

Writing your first test script for the IE browser

Now you are all set to write test scripts that run on the Internet Explorer browser. The following is the code that instantiates InternetExplorerDriver:

public class SearchTest {

WebDriver driver;

@BeforeMethod
public void...

Edge Driver

Microsoft Edge is the latest web browser launched with Microsoft Windows 10. Microsoft Edge was one of the first browsers to implement the W3C WebDriver standard and provides built-in support for Selenium WebDriver.

Similar to Internet Explorer, in order to execute test scripts on the Microsoft Edge browser, we need to use the EdgeDriver class and a standalone Microsoft WebDriver Server executable. The Microsoft WebDriver Server is maintained by the Microsoft Edge development team. You can find more information at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-edge/webdriver

Writing your first test script for the Edge browser

Let's set up the Microsoft WebDriver Server and create a test for testing the search...

Safari Driver

With Selenium 3.0 and WebDriver becoming the W3C standard, Apple now provides SafariDriver built into the browser. We do not have to download it separately. However, in order to work it with Selenium WebDriver, we have to set a Develop | Allow Remote Automation option from Safari's main menu, as shown in the following screenshot:

Allowing remote automation

Writing your first test script for the Safari browser

This is as straight forward. The following is the test script using the Safari Driver:

public class SearchTest {

WebDriver driver;

@BeforeMethod
public void setup() {

driver = new SafariDriver();
driver.get("http://demo-store.seleniumacademy.com/");
}

@Test
...

Summary

In this chapter, you have seen some of the major implementations of WebDriver that are widely used in the industry. We looked at some of the key configuration options for each browser and how to use them for custom profiles and mobile emulation. The underlying technology for every driver is JSONWire Protocol, which is fundamental for all the implementations. In the next chapter, we will learn how to use the Java 8 Stream API and Lambda functions with the Selenium WebDriver API.

Questions

  1. What is the significance of WebDriver becoming W3C Specification?
  2. True or False: WebDriver is an interface?
  3. Which browsers support Headless testing?
  4. How can we test mobile websites with Chrome?

Key benefits

  • Unlock the full potential of Selenium to test your web applications
  • Use Selenium Grid for faster, parallel running, and cross-browser testing
  • Test iOS and Android Apps with Appium

Description

Selenium WebDriver is an open source automation tool implemented through a browser-specific driver, which sends commands to a browser and retrieves results. The latest version of Selenium 3 brings with it a lot of new features that change the way you use and setup Selenium WebDriver. This book covers all those features along with the source code, including a demo website that allows you to work with an HMTL5 application and other examples throughout the book. Selenium WebDriver 3 Practical Guide will walk you through the various APIs of Selenium WebDriver, which are used in automation tests, followed by a discussion of the various WebDriver implementations available. You will learn to strategize and handle rich web UI using advanced WebDriver API along with real-time challenges faced in WebDriver and solutions to handle them. You will discover different types and domains of testing such as cross-browser testing, load testing, and mobile testing with Selenium. Finally, you will also be introduced to data-driven testing using TestNG to create your own automation framework. By the end of this book, you will be able to select any web application and automate it the way you want.

Who is this book for?

Selenium WebDriver 3 Practical Guide is for software quality assurance/testing professionals, software project managers, or software developers interested in using Selenium for testing their applications. Prior programming experience in Java is necessary.

What you will learn

  • Understand what Selenium 3 is and how is has been improved than its predecessor
  • Use different mobile and desktop browser platforms with Selenium 3
  • Perform advanced actions, such as drag-and-drop and action builders on web page

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
