Downloading a file from the Internet and deleting a file


Most computer users have downloaded files using their favorite browser: sometimes, pictures, video, or music, and other times, other applications and setup programs. In Linux, this is certainly possible from a browser in the GUI, but there are ways to download files using the command line too!

As useful a feature this is, it is easy to download a lot until you've run out of space to store your files. We will also cover the commands to help you clean things up. What could be more fun that learning a command that can wipe out your entire system?

Getting ready

If you are still in your SSH or serial window, you are ready to go.

How to do it...

The two commands that are built into most Linux systems are curl and wget. They are both good. Linux can never have one of anything. Generally speaking, wget has more options and is good for downloads and web scraping. We'll take a quick look at both:
