The cyber arms race
The new decade had just dawned, and before we had even got into our stride in the New Year, geopolitical tensions had risen as the US launched a drone attack and killed an Iranian military official, Qasem Soleimani. Iran was expected to retaliate, and they did. However, the military retaliation was expected to be only a small part of their action plan. Washington DC has been preparing for a widespread cyber attack to create chaos in the country.
CNN reported that government officials in the US have been working with cyber security firms such as Dragos, CrowdStrike, and Cloudflare. Several scenarios were created that were designed to understand the vulnerabilities and the potential scale of the threat. Some of those scenarios included attacks on the US power grid, targeting oil and gas firms relying on electricity.
