Francophone Africa music spread
Countries that share a common language tend to share common music tastes, literature, and other markers of culture, as well as trade together, provide job opportunities across borders, and share economic ties. In Africa, many countries’ histories include colonial periods in which they were under either English or French control; many countries still use English or French as a lingua franca for administrative purposes. To understand music spread across Francophone countries, we’ll create a network linking countries with more than 10% French-speaking populations that share a border. While other countries, such as Mauritius or Madagascar, have large French-speaking populations, they are geographically isolated from other parts of Francophone Africa.
