Technique: Photobashing
Photobashing is a relatively new term which applies to the art of fast and effective illustration—blending (compositing) photos with clip art, 3D assets, paint techniques, backgrounds, textures, and more. Typically, photobashing is used to prepare concept art for a client prior to commissioning a job, or to follow how a project is developing. Photobashing is used extensively within the game development market where the 'look' and feel of a scene, for example, needs to be extremely accurate before it can be translated into a 3D environment.
It's therefore handy to be able to produce a quick result by employing existing images and textures, rather than having to create a full image or storyboard which might take hours to physically draw from scratch.
The trick with this technique is in being able to blend or composite your various elements so the finished result appears natural, and of course this applies at all levels of expertise...
