Hands-On Cloud Administration in Azure

Azure Networking - Foundation of Azure IaaS

The next step in our cloud journey is Azure networking. This step will lay the foundation for our Azure infrastructure and will be used by both IaaS and PaaS in chapters to come. It's important to design and implement your Azure network with consideration for all Azure services that will be used in the future. This will save you a lot of headaches, and keep your cloud journey safe and without turbulence.

The areas that we'll cover in this chapter are the following:

  • Azure VNet
  • Address ranges
  • Subntets
  • IP address types and reservations
  • DNS
  • Network security groups (NSGs)
  • Azure virtual machine networking

Technical requirements

For this chapter, you'll need an Azure subscription.

Azure networking basics

The networking stack in Microsoft Azure is very important and is the foundation for other services, especially when we talk about IaaS. Setting up Azure networking correctly is very important, as it will be key to setting up your IaaS infrastructure and allowing your virtual machines to communicate. The networking stack in Azure is composed of two components, external and private. External is used to access service endpoints over the internet and private is used for communication between Azure services internally.

Almost all Azure services have external endpoints configured by default, but we have some special cases when we don't want to enable access over the internet. In these cases, we can disable external endpoints and set up these services to use private traffic only. This applies to PaaS as well, even though these services usually don't...

Connected devices

We have our VNet configured and ready but we need resources in there to actually start using it. The first step is to add a new Azure virtual machine to our VNet in order to start using the Azure networking stack.

Creating an Azure virtual machine

In order to create a new Azure virtual machine through the portal, we have to take three steps. We need to select New resource and select a new virtual machine. We have hundreds of images available and we'll discuss that in chapters to come:

  1. In this case, we need a single VM only, to show networking options for it, and we'll set all default parameters in order to get there quickly. I selected the Windows Server 2016 image and started providing the basic...

IP address types

Once the deployment of the VM is finished, we can see the device in Connected devices under the virtual network blade. An example of what the connected device blade looks like is shown in the following screenshot. Information shown here includes the device name, type of device connected, private IP address, and subnet the device is assigned to. IP address information is related to a private IP address, one that was assigned to our VM on the VNet level and is used only for internal traffic. Note that type of device is Network interface. Every VM has a network interface card (NIC) that is used to communicate with the network and one is automatically created with your VM. A virtual machine can have more than one NIC if you need to connect to multiple subnets or make sure that the VM is available, even when one NIC fails. The number of NICs depends on VM size, it...

ARM templates

We already talked about ARM templates and how they can help us automate things. For this chapter, I created a virtual network and joined one virtual machine to that network.

If you move to automation, you can find an ARM template in JSON format that you can use to redeploy my resources. The ARM template will contain all the resources and all the settings: a virtual network and parameters, a virtual machine with information about the image and size, NSG rules, and so on. It will contain information on all dependencies and information on what needs to be created first. For example, in order to create a VM, a subnet needs to be created in order to join the VM to that subnet, and a subnet can't be created until a VNet is created.

Note that some parameters, such as passwords, are not provided as a password isn't allowed to be shown in clear text, but only...

Summary

We covered the basic features of Azure networking with virtual networks, IP address types, and NSGs. This basic knowledge of Azure networking will be the foundation for chapters to come.

It's also very important to understand ARM templates, as they will be very helpful once our infrastructure becomes more complex.

From here, we'll advance to Azure IaaS, which will use Azure networking as the backbone and the service that holds everything together. We'll see how to create advanced VM scenarios that will use Azure networking, private for communication between VMs and public for external access. We'll explain in more detail options for creating new Azure virtual machines, availability groups, and high-availability for IaaS in Azure.

Key benefits

  • Understand Azure services to build, deploy, and manage workloads on cloud
  • Learn in-depth core Azure services and work through real-world scenarios and case studies
  • A concise and practical guide for learning cloud administration on Azure

Description

Azure continues to dominate the public cloud market and grow rapidly thanks to a number of recent innovations. Azure's wide range of services and support has led to a large number of customers switching to Azure cloud. Hands-On Cloud Administration in Azure starts with the basics of Azure cloud fundamentals and key concepts of the cloud computing ecosystem and services. Then, you will gradually get acquainted with core services provided by Azure, including Azure VNet, types and assignments of IP addresses, and network security groups. You will also work on creating and administering Azure Virtual Machines, types of virtual machines (VMs), and design VM solutions based on computing workloads. As you make your way through the chapters, you will explore Azure App Service, discover how to host your web apps in Azure, and monitor and troubleshoot them. In the concluding chapters, you will learn more complex and abstract services, such as Azure Storage, Azure Backup, and Azure Site Recovery. You will also get to grips with Azure SQL Databases and the SQL on Azure VM concept. By the end of this book, you will have obtained practical experience of working with Azure services and Azure administration, along with maintaining, monitoring, and securing your Azure resources.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
