Description
This book helps business analysts generate powerful and sophisticated analyses from their data using DAX and get the most out of Microsoft Business Intelligence tools.
Extreme DAX will first teach you the principles of business intelligence, good model design, and how DAX fits into it all. Then, you’ll launch into detailed examples of DAX in real-world business scenarios such as inventory calculations, forecasting, intercompany business, and data security. At each step, senior DAX experts will walk you through the subtleties involved in working with Power BI models and common mistakes to look out for as you build advanced data aggregations.
You’ll deepen your understanding of DAX functions, filters, and measures, and how and when they can be used to derive effective insights. You’ll also be provided with PBIX files for each chapter, so that you can follow along and explore in your own time.
Who is this book for?
Extreme DAX is written for analysts with a working knowledge of DAX in Power BI or other Microsoft analytics tools. It will help you upgrade your knowledge and work with analytical models more effectively, so you’ll need practical experience with DAX before you can get started.
What you will learn
Understand data modeling concepts and structures before you start working with DAX
Grasp how relationships in Power BI models are different from those in RDBMSes
Secure aggregation levels, attributes, and hierarchies using PATH functions and row-level security
Get to grips with the crucial concept of context
Apply advanced context and filtering functions including TREATAS, GENERATE, and SUMMARIZE
Explore dynamically changing visualizations with helper tables and dynamic labels and axes
Work with week-based calendars and understand standard time-intelligence
Evaluate investments intelligently with the XNPV and XIRR financial DAX functions
At first, I thought, WTH? BUT, AS I continued to read. the book made less and less sense, then suddenly it all clicked together! I felt sorry for Dax as it appeared that he lived in an unstable home, and he started to hallucinated both night and day with seeing monsters. His school principal he thought was an Ogre!! With his missing dad he was frantic to find him and he went through some weird changes. I can't say that I want to continued Dax's story as I do not think that my heart can take it.

Extreme DAX, reveals the full potential of the DAX language's features, and it's an exhilarating journey. I'm looking forward to the second edition, which will certainly bring additional tools, such as 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, that promise to extend the Scope of DAX even further. This is an absolute essential resource for BI Developers && BI Analysts, enabling the use of advanced DAX techniques to perform in-depth data analysis.

Books, rather than videos, have long been my preference for learning.Of the several DAX books I possess, Extreme DAX and DAX Patterns are the two I reference most.Extreme DAX is exceptionally well written. This is crucial when the Authors detail the topic which confounds most of us who first learned DAX: row and filter context. They expand on this topic to include query context. Before delving into 'context', they detail Power BI best practices including model design, calculated columns, and measures using the CALCULATE() function.Over the past several months since purchasing this book, I've adopted many of their best practices recommendations. Doing so has increased my level of confidence when taking on new Power BI work assignments especially those which do not align, design-wise, with my prior experience.

I'm the first person to suggest a google search when you need help with a concept or formula, but it's still nice to have a hardcopy book on your desk to reference for formulas or just read about a concept in general. There is so much to learn about DAX and this book breaks it down in small usable chunks. I highly recommend this for anyone learning DAX and/or Power BI or just want to have a good reference to refer to when you get stuck on something.
