Reviewing the VSM methodology
Throughout Chapter 4, Defining Value Stream Management, and Chapter 6, Launching the VSM Initiative (VSM Steps 1-3), this book introduced value stream management by applying an eight-step process that collectively defines a proven VSM through a generic methodology. For example, this eight-step VSM methodology has proven to work in manufacturing, office administration, supply chains, and health care applications and industries.
The eight steps are as follows:
- Commit to Lean
- Choose the value stream
- Learn about Lean
- Map the current state
- Identify Lean metrics
- Map the future state
- Create Kaizen plans
- Implement Kaizen plans
This eight-step VSM methodology works in IT-oriented value streams too, as shown in the CI/CD pipeline use case provided throughout this part of this book.
