Being involved with open source

Submitting a CV to a job opening is probably not how most developer advocates are hired. That's how I got hired for all of my developer positions, but for developer advocacy, it's easier to interview someone for that role by not even interviewing them. Often, you can see their conference talks and their blog posts. If you've got a developer who's not officially a developer advocate yet, but they do have some user group talks, a couple of blog posts, and so on, it's much easier for an organization to come up to that person and say, "You've got the right sort of profile; come and work for us."

Geertjan Wielenga: There's always the obligatory topic around the title of "tech evangelist" or "developer advocate." How do you see yourself, and does it make a difference?
