Parallel Programming and Concurrency with C# 10 and .NET 6

Part 1:Introduction to Threading in .NET

In this part, you will learn the basics of managed threading in .NET, discover how it has evolved since the early days of the .NET Framework, and pick up some best practices to avoid common pitfalls.

This part contains the following chapters:

  • Chapter 1, Managed Threading Concepts
  • Chapter 2, Evolution of Multithreaded Programming in .NET
  • Chapter 3, Best Practices for Managed Threading
  • Chapter 4, User Interface Responsiveness with Threading

Key benefits

  • Learn to implement parallel programming and handle concurrency in .NET efficiently
  • Switch threads while debugging and learn how to monitor specific threads in Visual Studio
  • Discover how to cancel tasks with callbacks, by polling, or by using a task with wait handles

Description

.NET has included managed threading capabilities since the beginning, but early techniques had inherent risks: memory leaks, thread synchronization issues, and deadlocks. This book will help you avoid those pitfalls and leverage the modern constructs available in .NET 6 and C# 10, while providing recommendations on patterns and best practices for parallelism and concurrency. Parallel, concurrent, and asynchronous programming are part of every .NET application today, and it becomes imperative for modern developers to understand how to effectively use these techniques. This book will teach intermediate-level .NET developers how to make their applications faster and more responsive with parallel programming and concurrency in .NET and C# with practical examples. The book starts with the essentials of multi-threaded .NET development and explores how the language and framework constructs have evolved along with .NET. You will later get to grips with the different options available today in .NET 6, followed by insights into best practices, debugging, and unit testing. By the end of this book, you will have a deep understanding of why, when, and how to employ parallelism and concurrency in any .NET application.

Who is this book for?

This book is for beginner to intermediate-level .NET developers who want to employ the latest parallel and concurrency features in .NET when building their applications. Readers should have a solid understanding of the C# language and any version of the .NET Framework or .NET Core.

What you will learn

  • Prevent deadlocks and race conditions with managed threading
  • Update Windows app UIs without causing exceptions
  • Explore best practices for introducing asynchronous constructs to existing code
  • Avoid pitfalls when introducing parallelism to your code
  • Implement the producer-consumer pattern with Dataflow blocks
  • Enforce data sorting when processing data in parallel and safely merge data from multiple sources
  • Use concurrent collections that help synchronize data across threads
  • Debug an everyday parallel app with the Parallel Stacks and Parallel Tasks windows

As an experienced software developer, I thought I had a good understanding of the rewards and especially the risks of parallel programming. What I didn't realize is how much easier it is now for .NET developers than it was in the past. This well-written book covers multithreading concepts well, then goes into several approaches to accomplish parallel programming tasks. After reading, I modified some legacy WPF code now running on .NET 7 to capture images from multiple cameras asynchronously in parallel instead of sequentially in only slightly more time that it previously took to use a single camera. It was a fun project to do, but the best part is the resulting customer satisfaction.I can't recommend this book enough. It's definitely not outdated despite .NET 6 in the title.

If you want to have a deep understanding about parallelism and concurrency concepts in C# and .Net 6 framework, then this book is for you. If you want to improve your .NET application's responsiveness, then this book is for you. This book begins by covering the basic concepts of threading in .NET and how it evolved over the various versions. .NET 6 has made a huge leap in performance when compared to earlier stable versions of .NET. This book explains how you can use these new features like asynchronous programming to improve the responsiveness of your application. Every concept is accompanied with great practical examples. It also provides detailed information about how you can debug multithreaded applications using the powerful Visual Studio and. It also provides some real-world examples regarding how you can efficiently unit test your parallel and asynchronous applications. Overall, a great resource for the intermediate .NET developers!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
