Sharing via Samba Server
NFS is not encrypted. Its security is primarily based on managing permissions and shared directories access based on IP. As an alternative, Samba has theoretically a bit higher security, but the following link lists all its current vulnerabilities (tens more than in NFS): https://www.samba.org/samba/history/security.html. Of course, each found vulnerability is fixed ASAP, so considering it is an old and mature technology, it is OK to be used.
Samba is the default way of sharing on Windows machines. It is essential to note the following security advice when using Samba:
- Never share on a public network except if explicitly required. Samba opens specific ports on your network connection, which is considered a potential severe vulnerability. Of course, it is acceptable in your home, office, or VPN network.
