Time for action—enabling a Piano Roll in the Song Editor

  1. To enable a Piano Roll in the Song Editor, simply double-click next to the first instrument we see; the Default preset triple oscillator synth. A black region will appear next to the synth, showing us where we are going to write our note information:

What just happened?

In LMMS terminology, that black area is called a block. Think of blocks as blank paper that you are about to write your masterpiece on. Blocks can be moved around in the Song Editor to create an arrangement.

Remember how we got instruments into the Beats+Bassline Editor? Well, the Song Editor works the same way. Simply grab a sample, preset, or instrument from the Side Bar and drop it on the Song Editor's track list. The track list is the area we currently see the Default preset synth that we create a block for a second ago.

Unlike the Beats+Bassline Editor, the Song Editor does not perform step sequencing. Its primary editor will be the Piano Roll editor...
