Hybrid Cloud for Architects

Hybrid Cloud – Why Does It Matter?

Having understood the different demographics of the cloud and the definition of the hybrid cloud, naturally, the next question one might ask is, why does it matter at all? This chapter is dedicated to answering this one question, and looking at the perspectives and usage scenarios of the different clouds, and we will see why hybrid cloud is the optimal solution in most cases.

There was a time when public clouds were just taking off and were in fashion, it was like the world was split into two factions. One, we will call the enthusiasts and the other faction, we will call the resistance.

The enthusiasts were predicting the rise of the public cloud and importantly, the complete annihilation of the concept of a private data center. The resistance, on the other hand was resisting this idea, as they loved the traditional...

What does the world say?

Surely, the preceding statements are common sense, but what does the world say about them? In order to find out, let's take a look at a survey taken by RightScale in their State of the Cloud report in 2017.

The survey was conducted with over 1000 people working in several industry segments and size of companies, and the survey yielded the following (among other things):

The inferences from the preceding survey are:

  • Almost every one (95%) is using the cloud in some form
  • Only 5% of the people are using private cloud only
  • Only 22% of the people are using public cloud only
  • 67% of the people are using hybrid cloud (combination of public and private)
The RightScale is a cloud provider and so the report may be a little biased. However, you can read the full report from RightScale by downloading it from their website at: https...

Pure-play public cloud strategy

The enthusiasts advocate the use of a pure-play public cloud strategy. While this has some advantages, it also comes with its share of limitations and problems, which is offset by following a hybrid cloud strategy.

Public cloud benefits

Before looking at the constraints, let's take a look at the major drivers leading to the adoption of a public cloud, which you must already be aware of:

  • Need for agility in application development
  • Ability to experiment without upfront costs
  • Reducing operational overheads of ops teams
  • Ability to consume enhanced services with little effort

Clearly, the public cloud is able to assist in all the previous points and...

Hybrid cloud case study

In order to fully understand, let us take the case of a company called Zynga. If you are not aware of it, it's a company that makes free online games for social media platforms such as Facebook. There are several games that Zynga makes, a notable few are Farmville, HitItRich Cityville, Poker, Mafia Wars, and so on.

If you are on Facebook, you must have played some of them. If you haven't, then you must have at least received a lot of requests from these games through your friends. At one point, Zynga were adding five new players a second.

When it was founded over a decade ago, in April of 2007, it did not have enough capital to start a data center of its own, and the natural fit was the public cloud. In 2009, Farmville had 10 million active daily users (running over 10000 instances).

Refer to the case study of AWS and Zynga at...

Summary – maximizing benefits

Having understood the different drivers of the clouds, it's time that we looked at how to use the hybrid clouds in order to maximize the benefits and returns on investments.

We can follow some very simple principles to decide the mix. The following table lists a few samples:

Workloads

Example

Ideal Candidate

Always-on virtual machine

A traditional web/app tier

Private cloud

Unlimited burst ability - short term

Big data workers

Public cloud

Development and test environments

Dev/test environments that will be shut down/destroyed when not in use

Public cloud

Sensitive data

Healthcare (PHI/PII) data, payment (PCI) data

Private cloud

Cognitive services adoption

Next-gen platforms

Public cloud

Rapid prototyping

Any new application where the infra requirements are unknown...

Key benefits

  • •Build a hybrid cloud strategy for your organization with AWS and OpenStack
  • •Leverage Hybrid Cloud to design a complex deployment pipeline
  • •Learn to implement security and monitoring best practices with real-world examples

Description

Hybrid cloud is currently the buzz word in the cloud world. Organizations are planning to adopt hybrid cloud strategy due to its advantages such as untested workloads, cloud-bursting, cloud service brokering and so on. This book will help you understand the dynamics, design principles, and deployment strategies of a Hybrid Cloud. You will start by understanding the concepts of hybrid cloud and the problems it solves as compared to a stand-alone public and private cloud. You will be delving into the different architecture and design of hybrid cloud. The book will then cover advanced concepts such as building a deployment pipeline, containerization strategy, and data storage mechanism. Next up, you will be able to deploy an external CMP to run a Hybrid cloud and integrate it with your OpenStack and AWS environments. You will also understand the strategy for designing a Hybrid Cloud using containerization and work with pre-built solutions like vCloud Air, VMware for AWS, and Azure Stack. Finally, the book will cover security and monitoring related best practices that will help you secure your cloud infrastructure. By the end of the book, you will be in a position to build a hybrid cloud strategy for your organization.

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted at cloud architects, cloud solution providers, DevOps engineers, or any working stakeholder who wants to learn about the hybrid cloud architecture. A basic understanding of public and private cloud is desirable.

What you will learn

This book is a MUST read, no matter if you are beginning your career or you spent 10+ years as an architect in IT. Cloud is a complex subject and everyone is trying to figure out sweet spot. Many books goes high level, miss out on essential functions of IT. This book covers end to end, starting from architecting to operationalizing. Alok(Author) has done a tremendous job explaining details of Public Cloud, enterprise grade computing, networking and all the required components. Waiting for his next series

The author has clearly worked on getting novices and advanced users to a single platform. In the changing nightmares of technology, this book provides an amazing insight into the way hybrid cloud can be conceptualized and architected for an enterprise. The author has provided significant examples to enforce and reinforce concepts. A humorous narrative keeps the reader involved. While this book can in no way be the only way to do things, based on my years of experience I can clearly state that this book provides all the right methods to follow. A good read, a good purchase and highly recommended to people who are either thinking of hybrid cloud or struggling with its implementation. The emphasis on basics is what pushes this book at the top of the stack

I bought this book mostly due to the title; but it's not really a book for architects. It discusses some basic topics (VPNs, etc.), knowledge of which ought to be assumed if you're at an architect level, before going into explorations of various tools (e.g. OpenStack, Kubernetes). What I really was looking for was a discussion of capabilities and models for how to design a hybrid platform - what capabilities are typically used where, and only then what particular tools might be useful in any given case. Some of that was there, but only in the most perfunctory fashion. I get that specific technologies are considered - it is in the title after all. That needs to be abstracted up to a model, however. Combined with spelling and grammatical errors, as well as some leaps of logic which were not supported by the references, I did not feel I got a good introduction here to hybrid cloud design.
