Researching LTE Advanced Networks: LTE HetNets and Interference Management Using ns-3
In this chapter, we will start by discussing an important LTE operator activity called site surveying, and planning for deploying eNBs or small cells (home eNBs) using heatmaps. Site surveying is a very important activity for mobile operators to maximize cell coverage and identify poor signal spots and black spots (no-signal areas). To conduct a site survey, the ns-3 LTE module offers Radio Environment Maps (REMs). In ns-3, to simulate LTE networks, users can generate REM plots and tune the operating power parameters and antennas of eNBs. REM plot insights about signal coverage help deploy eNBs and the optimal number of home eNBs (femtocells or small cells).
