Understanding layers
Layers are created and maintained in PSD files, better known as Photoshop Documents, found in most image editing programs. Layers allow users to work on individual images, design elements, and text on one layer at a time within the same documents. Layers help in creating an overall design or finished image.
Think of a Layer as a single sheet of tracing paper or a sheet of glass, so that you can draw, paint, write, or add some kind of effect on top of others. For example, you may have a tough time deciding whether a portrait looks better in a specific color. You could easily fill in or paint the background on a separate Layer behind the portrait to quickly see what works. Or, maybe you want to see if you should add a sky or a tree. It’s possible to do this by hiding, revealing, and organizing the Layers in Photopea’s Layers panel (see Figure 4.1):
