Integrating SCDPM with SCVMM


This recipe covers how to integrate System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2.

Getting ready

A common scenario in a modern data center is to provide the ability of outer external cluster migration where virtual machines are migrated to other clusters or standalone Hyper-V hosts. System Center Data Protection Manager has the ability to interact with the SCVMM client component to understand where the protected virtual machine was migrated to.

Note

You will not need any integration with SCVMM if you only perform inter-cluster migration scenarios. System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 understands and adapts to this, since the storage is not changed.

There are some important facts that must be considered before SCVMM integration and protection can occur:

  • DPM protection for live migration is only available on servers that are running Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
