Summary
In this chapter, we explored the elements of strings – characters. In particular, we explored the details of ASCII characters and how they are organized by developing a program in several iterations to print out a complete ASCII table. We also explored some simple operations that can be performed on characters using the C standard library.
From there, we saw how C strings are special arrays made up of characters and a terminating NUL
character. The NUL
terminating character is something that we must pay particular attention to when we create and manipulate strings. We explored how strings and string operations are built on other existing C concepts of arrays and pointers. We explored the difference between string literals, which are constant and modifiable strings. We then learned how to pass both of them to functions.
