Discovery and learning
The next step is to assess the cloud maturity model to understand the effort required to move to the next maturity level. Again, we need to run a holistic approach to identify the current state. The main goal of the discovery step is to understand the functional as well as non-functional requirements. We also need all essential functional and non-functional requirements for the target state. Figure 11.1 shows the target platform for a cloud modernization project. Here, the Java applications are moved from on-premises to the IBM cloud. At the end of the modernization taking place, some applications are chosen for retirement as shown in Figure 11.1:
