The Cloud Functions platform provides an effective way to run single-purpose code in the cloud. Remember that standalone services remove the need to manage a server or its associated runtime. The occurrence of an event notification then triggers single-purpose functions. The lightweight Cloud Functions platform then provides the basis for event-driven serverless compute.

Building single-purpose functions that are independently called provides a highly available architecture for building your services. Compounding these functions presents an excellent way to extend cloud services.
