Hands-On Microservices with Kotlin

Getting Started with Spring Boot 2.0

Spring is the most popular Java Framework, according to RedMonk's latest reports, and Spring Boot is becoming the starting point for Java Developers interested in microservices.

More details on the RedMonk report can be found here: http://redmonk.com/fryan/2017/06/22/language-framework-popularity-a-look-at-java-june-2017/.

In this chapter, we will be developing our first microservice with Kotlin using Spring Boot 2.0 and getting a deep dive into the Spring Boot application structure and how the component scan works. We will get a basic overview of how we could use Maven and IntelliJ IDEA to develop, build, and package our microservices and how to configure and run, and then learn about:

  • SpringBoot 2.0
  • Spring Initializr
  • Maven
  • IntelliJ IDEA
  • The component scan
  • Spring Application Context
  • Spring Configuration
  • SpEL
...

Creating a Spring Boot application

When we decide to create a microservice, we may have a clear view of what we want to do, but deciding how we are going to do it may be more complex than anticipated. In this section, we will guide you through the required initial steps. First, we may need to set up a set of tools, which we will use later for managing our projects' files and dependencies to edit our code.

Then, we will take advantage of using Spring Initializr, a service provided by Spring to easily create new Spring Boot applications. Since Spring Initializr generates a project for a chosen build system, in our case Maven, we will learn how to use it effectively. Finally, we may need an IDE that allows us to help in our developer tasks, from debugging to refactoring, IntelliJ IDEA will be our choice for this.

...

Spring Boot application structure

Microservices, if exposed as web services, either JSON or XML, need to have the corresponding HTTP server capabilities. As well as managing resources and connections to databases, they may consume other services, or even publish data through messages queues.

If you have worked with these kinds of applications before, you may remember how complex they were in order to configure and set up with probably dozens of XML files and properties and in many cases a lot of boilerplate code that initialized many of these systems.

Spring, through Spring Boot, provides a framework that will drastically reduce the boilerplate code and autoconfigure most of the system that we need to use.

Let's review the different components that we will use to create microservices.

...

Packaging and running a Spring Boot application

Now that we know something more about building microservices within Spring Boot, we need to package and run our service. This will teach us how to package a Spring Boot application.

Then, we will analyze the difference between packaging, using JARs or WARs.

Finally, we learn how to run the package applications, and how to creating self-executables JARs.

Packaging

We can package the application using the Maven lifecycle phase package, either using the IntelliJ Maven projects window or from the command line.

We can open a command line to the project folder from IntelliJ using the terminal window from the menu—View | Tool Windows | Terminal or using the Alt + F12 keybinding...

Configuring our application

When we create a Spring Boot application, we may need to use configuration values, things that we want to externalize from the application code itself, or that we may want to change without affecting the main code.

First, we will make some changes in our service and review the different methods to configure the application. Then, we will understand what Spring Expression Language is, and how we can use application profiles. Finally, we will apply our knowledge of configuration to create some conditional beans.

Setting configuration values

There is a time in any application that we may need to have a configurable value, something that we can define outside our main code and that can easily change...

Summary

Now we have a set of tools that we understand and will boost our productivity when creating microservices. When we create new microservices, instead of starting from scratch, we have to learn how to use Spring Initializr and how to customize it for our needs. We understand now what the component scan is and how by using components we can decouple our microservices implementation and we are ready to configure our microservices using the flexible Spring Configuration.

Now it's time to create more advanced microservices. For starters, we will do a deep dive into creating RESTFul APIs in the next chapter. There, we will learn how we can handle requests, and produce responses, or even handle errors, and how we can use HTTP verbs and status to produce our ubiquitous language for the users of our API.

Key benefits

  • Write easy-to-maintain lean and clean code with Kotlin for developing better microservices
  • Scale your Microserivces in your own cloud with Docker and Docker Swarm
  • Explore Spring 5 functional reactive web programming with Spring WebFlux

Description

With Google's inclusion of first-class support for Kotlin in their Android ecosystem, Kotlin's future as a mainstream language is assured. Microservices help design scalable, easy-to-maintain web applications; Kotlin allows us to take advantage of modern idioms to simplify our development and create high-quality services. With 100% interoperability with the JVM, Kotlin makes working with existing Java code easier. Well-known Java systems such as Spring, Jackson, and Reactor have included Kotlin modules to exploit its language features. This book guides the reader in designing and implementing services, and producing production-ready, testable, lean code that's shorter and simpler than a traditional Java implementation. Reap the benefits of using the reactive paradigm and take advantage of non-blocking techniques to take your services to the next level in terms of industry standards. You will consume NoSQL databases reactively to allow you to create high-throughput microservices. Create cloud-native microservices that can run on a wide range of cloud providers, and monitor them. You will create Docker containers for your microservices and scale them. Finally, you will deploy your microservices in OpenShift Online.

Who is this book for?

If you are a Kotlin developer with a basic knowledge of microservice architectures and now want to effectively implement these services on enterprise-level web applications, then this book is for you

As others have stated, there are a decent amount of typos but I really have to give the writer props. I've read a decent amount of Spring books and online material that have never been put together in such a complete and practical way. I bought this to learn Reactive Programming with Spring and best practices with Kotlin and the couple of chapters that actually covered this material were very informative. However, the entirety of this book has you go from learning the very basics to creating real production-ready microservices and deploying them using modern tools. And the small amount that is not covered, there are websites referenced. Best read on Spring by far, whether it book a book, or online tutorials.

Unfortunately this book hasn't been reviewed once after redaction! A lot of typos, and worse, several code errors in the book that wouldn't compile. Many implicit things that you have to figure out by yourself, I was expecting more..

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
