First it is important to know why you would display Volume/Pan Automation and Clip Gain:
Displaying Volume Automation and Pan Automation is required in order to be able to manually add keyframes, and manually adjust keyframes in Media Composer Version 5 and earlier. However:
New in Avid Media Composer Version 6, you do not have to display the Volume or Pan Automation in order to add keyframes to a Segment when using the Audio Mixer 's level sliders or pan knobs.
